LOFT 2011 // MENTION - NATURE RECLAIMS EVERYTHIN - Studio Synthesis + Red Machine - Mexico

Nature Reclaims Everything
Humans have reshaped the world. We’ve molded and carved earth’s surface to provide us with resources for our ever-growing population. Eventually time takes its toll on every structure; nature always finds a way to reclaim everything.
Conceptualized as a split in concrete where vegetation flourishes, this building emulates nature’s ability to thrive in the harshest environments. It also has a very specific function allowing for ventilation and sunlight to reach every level on the vertical on farm.
A self-sustained environment was created with the proper use of technology and design to provideinhabitants with every resource needed for daily life. A full-scale hydroponic farm working twenty-four hours a day almost autonomously provides rich organic food.On site food production includes fruits, vegetables, grains, poultry, fish and dairy products. Waste separation and recycling bring down the tower’s carbon footprint to a neutral point; organic waste is composted on site and reused to fertilize crops and park areas around the building. Water is reused throughout the building, this is made possible though the process of bio-filtering using fish, algae and a synthetic system to clean and purify water. Energy production is achieved with a revolutionary solar panel system implemented on major building façades. This type of system no longer requires direct sunlight to produce energy. In between both buildings is a large-scale wind turbine; it’s used as a secondary means of energy production. The main problem encountered by vertical farms is the amount of energy required to maintain and grow crops, this was taken into consideration and was a driving force in the building’s design.
