LOFT 2011 // SECOND PRIZE - VERTICAL FIELDS - RHWL Architects, England

The Vertical Field is a new formulation of urban living in which individuals and families cohabit with methods of aeroponic food production. Apartments become hermetic produce laboratories. Surplus goods are offered for sale in the market. The market is defined by a raised ‘ground’ plane, an elevated field, offering a public space reminiscent of past food production methods. The five residential/farm towers are connected by sky bridges that bring the street level up and provide communal spaces for the residents.
Traditional fields are used to generate shapes and as a social model in which the link between people and food production is reinvented to suit contemporary lifestyle.
